I keep a hand written note in my Bible from my husband, Scott. The note is a few years old, but it still makes me smile. His letter is thanking me for the effort I put into our backyard. The flowers I plant bring him joy. His note encourages me and frees me to do what I love, which is playing in the dirt. The essence of his note puts a spring in my step!

I’m wondering if you, child of God, realize that you are a letter from Christ to the world around you? You are a letter written by the Spirit.  As you live out the message of your letter, does it put a spring in your step as well as those around you?

“You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everybody. You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry written not with ink but the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.” 2 Corinthians 3:2-3

When I read this passage, it caused me to think, I was a letter written on the heart of my friend Gwen who told me about Jesus! Now the world reads her letter from Christ through my life. Just like Paul, his ministry and the Corinthian church.

Letters are written to communicate. Letters are written with intentions.  The author of a letter has motives, thoughts and desires that feel important enough to share.  Child of God, at some point in your life the Spirit wrote a letter on your heart.  Is the message of your letter as clear as it was when you first received it? Is the joy in rereading, sharing and living it fresh and free? Maybe today is a good day to reread your letter and remember how Jesus drew you to Himself.

“Restore to me the joy of your salvation
and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.”
  Psalm 51:12

RESTORE: to bring back into existence, use or the like: re-establish

SUSTAIN: to hold or bear up

What’s the love message Christ engraved upon YOUR heart?  How did He draw you to Himself? Is the essence of your letter the kindness of God? Perhaps it’s the depth and beauty of forgiveness. Did Christ write about His mercy that is new every day upon your heart? Maybe your letter shouts of His faithfulness or His majestic ways. You are a letter, handwritten by the Spirit of the living God, for those around you to read. What did the Spirit of the living God write upon your heart?

You dear one, are not just a letter but an ongoing book!  You are being written word by word, page by page, and chapter by chapter.  God’s work and authorship will continue until we see our Savior face to face. (Philippians 1:6)  Christ extends His love, mercy, faithfulness and mighty works to invite you to grow in continual maturity and renews you day by day. His ink is still wet! (2 Corinthians 4:16) If you are stumbling yet again, His arms are open wide for the next chapter.

It is easy to live in defeat and think or feel that God has “finished your book”. Often we want to write our own stories, don’t we?  Surrender that pen dear one! Invite the Spirit to write fresh words upon your heart. May you believe the author and perfector of our faith is still at work and never runs out of words! (Hebrews 12:2)

Meanwhile, is God writing someone else’s letter on your heart? Is there someone Christ longs to draw to himself through you?

“Oh, Father keep me willing and eager to share of your kindness.
Draw me to those who do not know you.
Help me embrace your children who are stumbling and feel at a distance from you.
Fill me with your love for them, that I may share your letter of compassion.”

You are a letter to the world, written by the Spirit of the living God.  May Christ’s letter to you put a spring in your step and those God has strategically placed around you!
